CHAPTER SIX

Wednesday and Thursday were busy days.

The sun was still rising on Wednesday when six burly marine veterans arrived in three pickup trucks and went to work.

As planned, once Lexie was dressed for the day, she went next door to prep the little house for Thursday’s tasks. It was a bigger chore than her grandmother’s house had been because there was more structural damage to sort through and work around. There was also more damage to possessions, so she had a greater number of things to evaluate as she decided whether to salvage and protect them or dispose of them.

Work was still going on when she finished but she showered the grime away in time to get to Mary’s place for dinner.

On Tuesday night, Gertie had suggested that she should leave Micah and his friends to a boys’ night and come spend the evening with her and Mary, and Lexie had agreed, staying until Gertie and Mary were ready for bed.

When she got back home, construction had stopped for the night, and Micah and his friends were in the backyard, nearer to the barn than the house. Sleeping bags were still rolled up but ready to use and they were grilling steaks on Gertie’s barbecue. It did indeed look like a boys’ night on a boisterous camping trip, beer bottles in hand.

The sounds of a whole lot of deep voices and laughter were still drifting up through the window from below when Lexie got into bed. She fell asleep listening hard for which voice, which laugh was Micah’s, trying not to analyze why she cared…

She woke Thursday morning to the sound of more power saws and hammering, and spent the day cleaning up the debris the construction had left behind in Gertie’s house. The kitchen and her grandmother’s bedroom were powdered with sawdust that—despite the plastic sheeting—had also crept onto the stairs and into the living room.

Finished with that late in the afternoon, she rushed to Mary’s apartment to stay with her grandmother while Mary went to the dentist.

“How’s the work on the houses going today?” Gertie asked when Lexie brought them both iced teas.

“Good… I think…” Lexie answered uncertainly. “I told you yesterday when I got here that they hadn’t really done anything except tear down what was left of the damaged wall. But when I got home last night, all the old stuff was gone and they’d framed the wall in—all nice and neat from the eaves to the ground—and nailed the tarps to it so the tarps don’t flap around as much. Now it looks like it’s ready for a whole new side wall, though.”

“Plastic tarps still aren’t locked doors so I’m glad Micah is there making sure nobody comes in,” Gertie said.

Lexie nodded rather than agreeing or disagreeing aloud, then went on with what she’d been saying. “Today they’re working on my place. The demolition part was finished quicker. The old side was all gone and they’d already started to put up the new frame before I left.
